Google Play and App Store

Apple App store was launched on July 10, 2008, and Android Market was launched 3 months after App Store launch on October 22, 2008. Google changed the Android Market Name, rather rebranded as Google Play on March 6, 2016.

At the start, Google had just a few apps in the store back in 2008, and it reached around 2300 apps in 2009 that was far behind compared to Apple’s App store with over 60,000 apps. Even in 2012, Google had around 500,000 apps in the Google Play Store, and Apple was still leading with almost 700,000 apps.

In 2014, Google Play Store surpassed Apple’s App Store reaching over 1.43 million apps compared to 1.21 million apps available in app store. It was the first time when Google managed to win the quantity race. Apple couldn’t chase Google Play Store since that time, and now the gap is too much to fill.

According to Statista report (June 2016), Google Play Store has around 2.2 million apps compared to 2 million apps in Apple’s App store.

Number of apps in App Store and Play Store

Along with Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the data also shows the number of apps in Amazon AppStore (600,000), Windows Store (669,000) and BlackBerry World (234,500) that is on the verge of destruction.

Apple holds the second position in terms of quantity, but in revenue, Google is far behind. Apple App Store generates around 75% more revenue compared to Google Play Store. It is one of the primary reason, many developers are coming to iOS platform leaving other Platforms behind.
