Apple was rumored to bring water resistant iPhone after iPhone 6s Survived Water Resistant Test. So the rumor was true, and Apple did it. Apple removed headphone port from new iPhone models, and launched iPhone 7 and 7 Plus with water and dust resistant feature. There are a couple of thing you should know about this feature, else you might get into trouble.

Things you should know about iPhone 7 and 7 Plus Water Resistant Feature

  1. iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus both are Water and Dust Resistant. There is a big difference between water resistant and water proof. A water proof item will not let water enter regardless of how long it is immersed into water, but a Water resistant device can hold the water for some times, and when you keep it for longer it will probably die. So you should understand the fact that both the iPhones are not waterproof, but water resistant. If you are caught in rain, went to swim without realizing that you have phone with you, or dropped a glass of water while having breakfast, the phone should not get damaged, but… read other points.
  2. New iPhones are IP67 Rated, where IP stands for Ingress Protection, Number defines complete protection against dust or dirt, and number is about protection against water. An IP67 rated device means to survive for up to 30 minutes under maximum for 1 meter deep water.
  3. Water or Dust Resistant feature is not permanent. Resistant capacity may reduce upon usage, abuse, damage, repair, parts replacement etc..
  4. Apple won’t replace the device or repair it for free if your iPhone gets damaged because of liquid. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus both comes with 1 year standard warranty, but Liquid Damage is not covered, and Apple has already mentioned this in black and white on their website. That means, you should always try to keep your phone safe from water, just like you did earlier when iPhones were not water resistant.

What is the difference between IP67 and IP68

  • There is no difference in dust resistance feature, both have rating 6.
  • IP67 defines that a device would not die under up to 1 meter deep water for up to 30 minutes. A smartphone or gadget with IP68 can hold the water for up to 30 minutes under 1.5 meter deep water. Samsung Galaxy S7 is an example of IP68 rated Smartphone.

What Apple did to make iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Water Resistant?

What do you think Apple has done to make iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Water Resistant? Here is a YouTube Video from JerryRigEverything that explains;

iPhone 7 vs Samsung Galaxy S7 Water Resistant Test under 35 Feet Deep Water

As we already mentioned that iPhone 7 is low rated (IP67) compared to Galaxy S7 (IP68) as far as Water and Dust Resistant feature is concerned. However a 35 feet (around 10.7-meter) deep water test has been done by EverythingApplePro, and the results are very surprising. Samsung Galaxy S7 died in 35 feet deep water test even with the higher rating, but iPhone 7 survived. Here is a video of the water resistant test.

Samsung Galaxy S7 died, but iPhone 7 Survived. Is Galaxy S7 not enough water resistant?

Well, Samsung Galaxy S7 has done more than Samsung told users. Samsung promises that Galaxy S7 will survive in 1.5-meter deep water, but Galaxy S7 did survive 30 feet deep water (around 9.1-meter). iPhone 7 did a very good job, and refused to die even under 35-feet deep water (around 10.7-meter). However, this doesn’t mean that Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 will always survive that deeper. There is no need to try that with your iPhone, because liquid damage is not covered under warranty.
