Samsung’s Exynos 7420 is certainly a powerful 14nm CPU, and today they have announced another 14nm CPU Exynos 7870, but it will be used in mid-range devices. This chip is also known as Exynos 7 Octa 7870. It is an octa-core processor based on Cortex-A53, and they claim that it will consume 30 percent less power.

However, we are just going to compare the performance of Exynos 7870 with other mid-range CPUs. We have chosen Helio X10, Snapdragon 652 and Snapdragon 650 because Samsung Smartphones with Exynos 7870 is not going to be much cheaper. The price tag would be almost the same or may be even higher.

Exynos 7870 will arrive with Galaxy J7 2016 that has already been benchmarked via GeekBench 3 and GFXBench. The performance report shows that Exynos 7870 is even worse than MediaTek’s Helio X10. So you can’t even expect it to perform better than Snapdragon 652 or Snapdragon 650.

Snapdragon 650 is the best in terms of single-core performance, but it has gone down  in multi-core because it features a hexacore processor compared to octa-core CPU in rest 3.

Even Exynos 7870, that is based on 14nm tech turned out to be lower in performance compared to rest 3 CPUs that are based on 28nm tech. Four cores out of 8 in Snapdragon 652, and 2 cores out of 6 in Snapdragon 650, are based on Cortex A72, but Exynos 7870 is based on Cortex A53. How about MediaTek’s Helio X10? Helio X10 seems to be the worst one in single-core performance, but it scores well in multi-core. However, do remember that you should always give more importance to multi-core score. So many low powered cores cannot make the device perform well compared to those with some but powerful cores.

Well, in the end, the price tag of a smartphone matters. If Samsung managed to set lower price tag compared to other mid-range CPUs, then it would sound fair enough, but this is not likely to happen anyway.
