China has introduced the world’s first hydrogen- powered tram. Lian Jianying, chief engineer of Sifang Co., a subsidiary of Southern Railways Corporation of China, said that this fact makes the railway “unique in its field.”

To build this hydrogen-powered tram took two years of research to solve each issue and every one of the technical problems relating to incorporate this new release. The hydrogen fuel cells are a source of clean energy used in the automotive industry, although quite late in the field of trains.

The vehicle is recharged with hydrogen within only 3 minutes and has a range of 100 kilometers. The average distance of the routes that is done with this hydrogen-powered tram in China is 15 km, so a recharge for three complete trips is more than enough to make the train run. The transport reaches at a top speed of 70 km / h.

Lian Jianying has said they are exploring ways to further reduce the total cost of the tram, but also highlighted the environmental benefits of the vehicle. He ensured that this tram will not produce nitrogen oxides as the reaction temperature within the fuel cell is kept below 100 degrees. Therefore, water is the only emission substance of the train.

Its creators have clarified that hydrogen-powered tram can carry at least 380 passengers and has total 60 seats.

Now we have to see when this technology gets beyond its borders and reaches other countries of the globe.
