iPad Pro is the largest tablet Apple has ever made, It features 12.9 inches display, 2732 X 2048 pixels resolution, 4GB RAM, Apple A9X CPU with M9 motion coprocessor, 8-megapixel iSight and 1.2-megapixel Facetime HD camera.

4GB RAM for iPad Pro was leaked earlier when Adobe mentioned on its website unintentionally, and removed later. However, rest of the specification for Apple A9X processor was still unknown.

12-core GPU, L3 Cache, RAM and Memory BandWidth

iPad Pro (Apple A9X) features a 12-core GPU, but there is no official name for this. It falls between 8-core GT7800 and 16-core GT7900. Apple has customized PowerVR Series7 GPU in 12-core. So the Graphic is more powerful compared to iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

However, there is one thing that is quite confusing. L3 cache is missing in Apple A9 chip that was available in its predecessor, but L2 cache remained 3MB, same as Apple A9.

Apple A9X features 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 128-bit Memory Bus Width and 51.2GB/sec Memory Bandwidth.

Apple A9X vs Apple A9 vs Apple A8X

Apple A9x has dual-core processor

Apple used triple-core in A8X processor that was used in iPad Air 2. So we expected the same or a quad-core processor, but it didn’t happen. Apple A9X features a dual-core processor with increased clock speed (2.26 GHz), but the 2-core is more powerful compared to 3-core found in Apple A8x chip. The chip is TSMC made based on 16nm FinFET technology. Apple has proved that it doesn’t matter how many cores you use in a chipset, but how to optimize the device and make single-core performance better. Less core also help to consume less battery, and keep the device’s temperature in control. You can understand the performance looking at Apple A9X single-core and multi-core Geekbench 3 benchmark report.
